Market Insights

The following themes consistently emerge in our conversations with leaders across GME sponsoring institutions, accrediting bodies, specialty boards, and academic medical centers.

Competency-Based Medical Education Is Moving from Concept to Implementation

The transition from time-based to outcomes-based training continues to accelerate. Organizations are increasingly focused on translating competencies and Entrustable Professional Activities into practical assessment models that support physician development while maintaining educational rigor.

The DIO Role Is Expanding in Scope and Strategic Importance

Designated institutional officials are increasingly expected to bring accreditation expertise alongside physician engagement skills, organizational influence, and enterprise-level leadership. The role continues to evolve beyond program oversight into broader institutional strategy.  The balance of education, research, health systems science and research in the training environment requires leadership agility and ongoing analysis of financial resource oversight, accreditation and compliance, learning and work environment and the strategic aims of the sponsoring institution.

Preparing Physicians for Today's Healthcare Environment Requires Broader Leadership Capabilities

Medical education leaders are increasingly focused on preparing physicians to succeed in healthcare systems. Alongside clinical training, quality, safety, interdisciplinary collaboration, care transitions, workforce dynamics, and health system operations are becoming essential elements of physician preparation.

Leadership Continuity Is Becoming a Governance Priority

The pipeline of leaders who combine clinical credibility, educational expertise, and executive leadership capability remains highly competitive. Boards and executive teams are taking a more deliberate approach to succession planning for DIO, chief academic officer, and physician executive roles.

Case Studies

Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

Since 2013, Furst Group has served as a trusted search partner to the ACGME across more than 50 engagements. Our most recent placement, Kathleen A. Zoppi, PhD, MPH, joins as Executive Director, Institutional Review Committee, bringing 15 years of GME leadership across both large academic institutions and community-based health systems.

Earlier in our partnership, we recruited the Senior Vice President, Accreditation. That placement, Dr. Mary Klingensmith, was subsequently promoted to Chief Accreditation Officer, and the organization later re-engaged Furst Group to recruit her successor.

ACGME searches require thoughtful management of candidate confidentiality throughout the process. The DIO and accreditation leadership community is close-knit, and our experience in this environment means we understand both the visibility of these roles and the discretion they demand.

American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)

When ABMS engaged Furst Group to recruit a Senior Vice President, Certification Standards and Programs, the organization had been conducting its own search for several months. We completed the engagement within 100 days, helping the organization secure a leader whose experience aligned with the role’s strategic and operational demands.

Chief Quality Officer

A recent Chief Quality Officer search illustrates the expanding expectations placed on today’s physician executives. Partnering closely with the search committee, we identified leaders with the clinical credibility, enterprise perspective, and collaborative leadership style needed to advance quality, engage physicians, and support long-term organizational strategy.

The successful appointment strengthened executive leadership, reinforced the organization’s commitment to quality and patient safety, supported academic excellence, and positioned the health system for continued growth and innovation.

Physician Leadership Development

Recruiting the right leader is only part of the equation. Once in place, physician executives benefit from structured development support that addresses the unique challenges of moving from clinical practice into organizational leadership.

NuBrick Partners, our affiliate leadership development and organizational consulting firm, works with physician leaders and their teams to accelerate performance, build leadership capability, strengthen team effectiveness, and support successful leadership transitions.

Whether you are onboarding a newly appointed DIO, supporting a chief academic officer stepping into broader enterprise responsibilities, or investing in the long-term development of your physician leadership pipeline, NuBrick brings a practical, evidence-informed approach to leadership development.
